Breaking the Silence: Stories of Strength in Tampa Bay || Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Breaking the Silence" is a compelling documentary set in the heart of Tampa Bay, aiming to shed light on the realities of sexual assault. During Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), we dive into the lives of survivors, their journey of resilience, and the community fighting alongside them. This film seeks to educate, challenge societal norms, and inspire open conversations on a topic often left in the shadows.
Colorism within the Black Community
Colorism is the practice of favoring one skin color over another, often privileging lighter skin and Eurocentric features over darker skin and Afrocentric traits. This documentary, part of my applied research project for my Master's in Mass Communication and Media Literacy and Analysis, examines how colorism affects Black people in the U.S. and is perpetuated by media, reinforcing harmful stereotypes. Key insights include the prevalence of colorism in both Black communities and broader society, the challenge of articulating concepts like intersectionality beyond personal experiences, and the systematic nature of colorism. This project aims to inspire, inform, and captivate audiences by shedding light on this critical social issue.
In documentaries, there's a truth that unfolds unnaturally, and you get to chronicle it. In narratives, you have to create the situations so that the truth will come out.”
